Frequently Asked Questions.

For Consumers
For Suppliers

Where does TK Natural Lamb come from?

TK Natural lamb is bred and grown by a dedicated family of farmers located around the middle of the North Island of New Zealand. All our farmers are committed to delivering quality, healthy lamb that’s 100% grass fed and pasture raised.

How do you cook it?

Very simply, Grill, Roast or Braise – essentially, cook as you would your other red meats to the temperature of your liking. As our lamb is 100% grass fed and lean, we recommend reducing your normal cooking times. We enjoy our lamb served medium rare for a full flavour experience. Check out some of our favourite lamb recipes here.

How does TK Natural Lamb get from New Zealand to here?

Our lamb is processed and packed in our efficient TK (Te Kuiti) plant in New Zealand. It’s packaged and perfectly sealed in a variety of ways and shipped in strictly controlled refrigerated containers to allow the meat to “age”. This results in consistently tender lamb.

What is the Non-GMO Project?

The Non-GMO Project is a widely recognised standard used extensively throughout North America to provide consumer’s confidence the products meeting this standard have not been fed any Genetically Modified Feed. In New Zealand this means not fed any imported lucerne, imported stock feed, grain or grain by-products, or compounded or manufactured stock feed from birth to harvest.

Is TK Natural Lamb organic?

No. But it has the same attributes. Raised as nature intended on a 100% grass fed and pasture diet with no antibiotics or added hormones.

Is lamb healthy for you?

Grass fed lamb is a healthy option. It’s lean, high in protein and rich in essential minerals and vitamins for good health: Iron, Zinc, Vitamin D and B Vitamins: B12, niacin, B6 (pyridoxine), B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin) and biotin. Compared with grain fed beef, TK Natural grass fed lamb gives you: 60% more omega-3 fatty acids, twice as much vitamin A and E, three times more conjugated linoleic acid (a good fat associated with low body fat and reduced incidence of cancer), a higher concentration of unsaturated fats versus saturated fats.*

Is TK Natural Lamb Paleo?

Yes.

Does TK Natural Lamb follow ethical farming practices?

We are proud to offer our lamb under both the Global Animal Partnership Step-4 accreditation programme www.globalanimalpartnership.org and be Non-GMO Project verified. www.nongmoproject.org. Our farmers care for their animals and land with the utmost compassion and consideration. They work with the natural ecosystems of their land and aim to keep the environment as pristine as possible. Many of them have set aside areas on their farm for conservation purposes, focusing on regenerating the land and water. We ensure that our lamb can be traced from the shelf back to the farm on which it was raised.

How are your lambs 100% grass fed year round?

TK Natural farms are located in the temperate zones of New Zealand, where climatic extremes are uncommon, thus allowing grass growth all year round. Much of the success of New Zealand farming is based on rotational grazing management, where lambs are moved regularly to fresh pastures.

How are TK Natural Lambs raised?

Our lambs are 100% grass fed and free to roam the rolling green hills of New Zealand. There is no place for feedlots in our farming practices.

What is the difference between grass fed and grain fed?

Lambs are ruminant animals, which means they were designed to eat grass. It keeps them happy and healthy. Grain fed animals are traditionally raised in feedlots with an unnatural diet based on corn or soy and are often given growth hormones and antibiotics to survive unsanitary living conditions. A grass fed diet is healthier for our animals and healthier for us too.

What do you mean by raised without added hormones or added antibiotics?

Animals raised in feedlots are often given growth hormones and antibiotics to survive unsanitary living conditions. We never use feedlots and never add hormones or antibiotics to our animals’ diet.

Why should I be farm assured?

Today’s modern meat consumer is asking where has this meat come from? Is it safe for my family to eat? How was it raised? To satisfy these expectations we label our product with several assurances and the farm assurance programmes delivers authenticity, integrity and MPI validation.

Are these standards difficult to meet?

We do not believe so. The audit procedures are a proven process that are well structured and your livestock agent and auditor will lead you through the process.

On what regularity will I be audited?

For the TKFAP gold standard it is every three years and for the TKGAP elite standard every 15 months.

Which TK standard is right for me?

It’s more about what you feel comfortable with. If you are new to the farm assurance process we suggest start with the TKFAP. The TKGAP standard is an Elite standard and one you can aspire to as you gain confidence in the process.
